Background of the Study
Cultural institutions, including museums, cultural centers, and literary societies, are vital in preserving and promoting indigenous languages. In Ibadan, such institutions play an influential role in shaping Yoruba language policies by advocating for curriculum reforms, organizing cultural events, and supporting language research. Their efforts aim to foster a sense of pride and continuity in Yoruba cultural heritage while addressing the challenges posed by globalization and linguistic homogenization (Ogunleye, 2023). These institutions serve as bridges between traditional language practices and modern policy frameworks, providing a platform for community engagement and scholarly research. By contributing to language standardization and policy formulation, they help ensure that Yoruba remains a living, evolving medium of communication. This study examines how cultural institutions in Ibadan influence Yoruba language policies, analyzing their strategies, contributions, and the challenges they face in advocating for effective language planning (Adeleke, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although cultural institutions are recognized as key drivers of language policy, their role in shaping Yoruba language policies in Ibadan has not been thoroughly examined. There is a gap in understanding how these institutions contribute to policy formulation and implementation, as well as the challenges they encounter. Insufficient collaboration between government bodies and cultural institutions may hinder the development of comprehensive language policies that reflect community needs. This study addresses these issues by investigating the role of cultural institutions in influencing Yoruba language policies, thereby providing insights into how such partnerships can be strengthened (Ogunleye, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the contributions of cultural institutions to Yoruba language policy formation.

  • To evaluate the challenges faced by these institutions in policy advocacy.

  • To recommend strategies for strengthening collaboration between stakeholders.

Research Questions

  • How do cultural institutions in Ibadan shape Yoruba language policies?

  • What challenges limit their influence?

  • What measures can enhance collaboration between institutions and policymakers?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the pivotal role of cultural institutions in the formulation of Yoruba language policies, offering critical insights for cultural advocates and policymakers. Strengthening these institutions’ contributions can lead to more effective language planning and cultural preservation in Ibadan (Ogunleye, 2023; Adeleke, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the role of cultural institutions in shaping Yoruba language policies in Ibadan and does not consider broader national or regional language planning efforts.

Definitions of Terms
